I would seriously consider signing up for a guided walking tour of Detroit to get a real taste of the downtown. However, if that isn't possible and if the free tours of the Guardian and Fisher at Pure Detroit building don't work for your schedule , then you can go into both buildings and as they are public buildings, The Fisher building has live theater and you can see a great "Broadway" production there. The Fisher building has a hallway that reminded me of the hall of mirrors in Versailles.
