Drenched in fog most of the year, this lighthouse is one of the foggiest in the country, and is a great whale-watching spot in the fall and spring.

A:
I don't think you have to make reservations, but the lighthouse is closed in windy weather. If you go, be prepared to climb up and down exterior stairs along the cliff to reach it.

I most certainly would recommend renting a car. If you've never been to Monterey, that would be a great treat. You can visit the 17 Mile Drive on Pebble Beach. Along the way there's Santa Cruz, and I highly recommend taking Highway 1 from SF to Monterey, even as far as Big Sur. If you decide to primarily stay North of SF, then, of course there Big Sur, Napa Valley and the all the wineries along the North Coast. Have Fun.
Q:
I read somewhere that it is an hour drive from the entrance of the park to the lighthouse? Is that accurate?
A:
It may be less than an hour, but a beautiful drive. The day we were there it was very foggy at the light, but we waited for 30 minutes and it cleared a bit.
