The Boilermakers defense posted a second-half shutout but the offense could not play clean enough to recover from a 21-point halftime deficit. The only way the Boilermakers avoid going winless in the Big Ten and against FBS opponents is if they win in eight days at Indiana.

Michigan State football survived a late comeback attempt must-win game on Friday night primetime against Purdue. The Spartans (5-6, 3-5 Big Ten) got the first of two necessary wins in the final two weeks against Purdue and Rutgers to clinch bowl eligibility for the first time since 2021.

Purdue also will be down one of its top offensive weapons. Receiver CJ Smith, who has started the last three games and has six receptions for 69 yards, is out. Offensive lineman Joshua Sales Jr., who started the season opener, will miss his eighth straight game.
