Researchers have identified an exploit that allows hackers to use Apple's Find My network to track the location of any Bluetooth device.

Macworld Researchers at George Mason University have discovered a way to track just about any Bluetooth device using Apple’s Find My network. The hack, dubbed nRootTag, can be used by hackers to make any Bluetooth device into “unwitting homing beacons.

Hackers have worked out how to exploit Apple's Find My network, by abusing Bluetooth on a device to effectively turn anything into a trackable AirTag.

Apple’s Find My Network lets users easily track the location of their iPhones, Macs, and other possessions using an AirTag. However, researchers have found a flaw in this location-tracking service, which allows hackers to silently pry the location through any Bluetooth-enabled device.

An AirTag is designed to send out Bluetooth messages, or “pings,” that can be detected by iPhones and other Apple devices that may pass by. The location is then sent anonymously and securely to Apple’s servers, where it can only be viewed by the owner of the AirTag ( and only by the owner and those they’ve shared its location with ).
