Sony has updated the PlayStation website to mention that the PS2 is now at a staggering 160 million units sold worldwide since its launch 24 years ago.

In fact, based on forecasts alone, the company expects the Switch to top 154 million units by April 2025, which would put it just six million units behind the PS2 at that point. Assuming it achieves these targets, we think it’s inevitable the Sony system will be eventually dethroned.

Sony's PlayStation 2 is one such product, confirmed by the company to have sold a staggering 160 million units. Released on October 26th of 2000 in the US, it came after the Japanese launch in March of that same year.

The PS2 clearly isn't going to let go of its astronomical sales record any time soon, as Sony has announced that a further five million of the things were somehow sold since it last reported numbers in 2012.

In celebration of PlayStation's 30th anniversary, the media conglomerate confirms the PS2 moved 160 million units since its release in 2000.

Sony has finally confirmed the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 2, coming in at a whopping 160 million consoles sold worldwide.

While it was assumed at one point the hybrid system only needed to shift another 15 million units to surpass this milestone, PlayStation's ex-CEO Jim Ryan burst this bubble earlier this year, claiming the PS2's lifetime sales were recorded as 160 million units.

The new figures peg the PS2 as the highest-selling home console in history, beating the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Switch for the top spot. The last time Sony officially revealed the PS2's sales stats was over ten years ago in 2011.

Despite it no longer being in the market, the number of units sold has increased from previous official information.
