Atlanta's first-ever inspector general, Shannon Manigault, says she will resign after being retaliated against for her office's work to root out waste, fraud and abuse at city hall.

The city IG, Shannon K. Manigault, spoke hours before the City Council approved a bill that would restructure oversight of the inspector general's office.

Citing "sustained and savage" attacks from City Hall, Atlanta inspector general Shannon Manigault announced her resignation from her position Monday, capping off several months of tension between the watchdog and Mayor Andre Dickens' administration.

Shannon Manigault, Atlanta’s first-ever inspector general, has resigned. The Office of the Inspector General, or OIG, is tasked with investigating fraud, corruption, and abuse within the city government.

"I’ve come to the incredibly difficult decision to resign as the Inspector General for the City of Atlanta. I hate that it’s come to this," Shannon K. Manigault said.

Atlanta Inspector General Shannon Manigault announced her resignation Monday morning on the steps of City Hall, citing city leadership’s attacks on her office, herself personally, and her family.

She says she and her staff have faced “threats, bullying, intimidation and harassment at the hands of people who have been the subjects of our investigations”.

The Office of Inspector General was created in 2020 to combat corruption and waste in City Hall after a bribery scandal resulted in city officials going to prison. Following several high-profile investigations and complaints from some city employees about the office's tactics,
