Parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas began to see snowfall on Thursday as Southern states stretching to the Carolinas brace for the storm to reach them on Friday.

Brutal cold will open the door for a winter storm to take a somewhat unusual track through the South and create treacherous conditions.

A low-pressure system is moving across the country, delivering rain, snow, and ice to much of the southeast. This same system will be making its way along the east coast early this weekend, bringing a chance for accumulating snow to the tri-state.

Another massive winter storm is forecast to pummel the southern and eastern U.S., with impacts from Texas to the Carolinas.

The winter storm is producing a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain over parts of many southern states, as depicted in the radar snapshot below. Up to 12 inches of snow has already fallen in parts of the Texas Panhandle,

The Weather Channel has named the storm Winter Storm Cora, and it’s expected to bring more days of subfreezing temperatures to northern Florida and parts of Central Florida. The frigid temperatures may be responsible for one death in the Florida Panhandle.

Storm Cora will bring a round of snow and ice to many southern cities, including Dallas, Shreveport, Little Rock, Birmingham, Atlanta, Memphis and Raleigh. Several inches of snow and some ice will fall from Texas to Georgia and South and North Carolina through Saturday.
