The death toll in a monthslong standoff between police and miners trapped while working illegally in an abandoned gold mine in South Africa has risen to at least 87, police said Thursday.

The closure of some of South Africa's gold mines in several provinces has attracted thousands of undocumented migrants from neighboring countries, who have arrived to reopen closed and disused mines.
