Earlier this month, the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the alleged custodial torture of two women who took part in a protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The bench ordered the probe after it found discrepancies in the medical reports of protesters.

Charges were drawn up last week, while the man arrested said he was ‘completely innocent’ and was being framed.

A court in the eastern state of West Bengal began the trial on Monday of a police volunteer accused of raping and murdering a doctor at a government hospital in August, a case that has sparked outrage over the lack of safety for women in India.

The Supreme Court directed a special investigation team to probe the alleged police torture of a woman protestor. The woman was arrested after protesting the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor. The High Court had initially ordered a CBI inquiry.

On November 11, the top court stayed the October 8 order of the high court directing a CBI probe while asking the state government to submit a list of seven IPS officers, including five women, who would comprise a fresh SIT to probe the custodial torture case.
