The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday tallied the highest number of US measles cases since the disease was declared eliminated a quarter-century ago, just as a key Senate committee split the vote to advance President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the public health agency.
Measles is an airborne disease (caused by a morbillivirus of the paramyxovirus family) which spreads easily from one person to the next through the coughs and sneezes of infected people. Measles usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth.
Three deaths reported nationally as Ohio's outbreak ends with 35 cases, while Texas accounts for 753 infections in the largest national surge since measles was declared eliminated in 2000.
Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties have reported eight cases so far this year compared to 10 total in 2024.
The state now has 35 confirmed measles cases, with the first one confirmed April 29 in Williams County in northwest North Dakota. Until this week, the state had not confirmed a case since May 28, according to the state’s measles dashboard.
