The official told Military.com that Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, North Carolina, New Mexico, Wisconsin and Washington state have all activated small numbers of National Guard troops on state orders, around 126 service members in total.

A few states have said they will have the National Guard on standby as a precaution for potential civil unrest on Election Day after ballot drop boxes were set on fire last week.

Wisconsin is among 10 states that have activated National Guard personnel as part of a broader national effort to ensure Election Day security and support. According to Pentagon officials, these activations are part of a larger initiative involving at least 245 National Guard personnel across 18 states and Washington,

Oregon and Nevada also plan on having National Guard troops on standby to assist local law enforcement on election day.

Washington state’s decision reflects broader concerns across the country that violence may erupt around the election.

The state, where Democrat Kamala Harris is easily expected to defeat Republican Donald Trump according to polling, was one of two where ballot boxes were set on fire earlier in the week. Early voting is available to those in Washington and more than 2 million have already cast their ballots,
