Breaking Down the Ending of Netflix’s ‘Emilia Pérez’
After its historic, award-winning run at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Emilia Pérez became one of the biggest films of 2024 and now the Oscar buzz is alive and well with its 13 Oscar nominations. Luckily, the film has finally been officially released on Netflix! And the positive reviews don't hurt its reputation either, thanks to its star-studded cast and brilliant storytelling. The film follows a lawyer in Mexico City named Rita Mora Castro (Zoe Saldaña) who makes a deal with the devil, aka cartel leader Manitas del Monte (Karla Sofía Gascón). For an enormous, life-changing sum of money, Rita agrees to help Manitas complete transitioning and live an authentic life as a woman named Emilia Pérez. They do this in secret, faking Manitas’s death, and hiding it even from his wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) and their two children. This creates complications later when Emilia decides that she wants to keep her family in her new life. The impactful performances from the female leads earned all four of them (including Adriana Paz, who plays Epifanía), the Best Actress award at Cannes as an ensemble. But the plot and performances during the film’s last few scenes were particularly intense—and admittedly, a bit dark (in both the figurative and literal Game of Thrones-kind-of-lighting sense). So if you couldn’t quite catch what happened in those last few moments, let’s dig into it. Warning: Major spoilers ahead. The tables turn on Emilia.Ironically, a former cartel boss becomes the abductee. This all happens after Jessi tells Emilia that she plans on getting married and moving away with her boyfriend, Gustavo (Édgar Ramírez). Naturally, thinking that Emilia is merely her dead husband’s cousin, Jessi doesn’t understand why “Tia Emilia” gets worked up and is so hell-bent on keeping the kids in her house. She even hires a hitman to beat up and bribe Gustavo to leave town without his fiancée. Jessi then flees Emilia's house with the children, and as a result, Emilia cuts her off from the money Manitas left her.Desperate to get her money, Jessi and her boyfriend kidnap Emilia and hold her for ransom. To make their message clear to Rita—who has become Emilia’s best friend, and second-in-command when it comes to all her business matters—they mail her Emilia’s chopped fingers.Does Emilia ever reveal her old identity?Aside from Rita and her surgeon Dr. Wasserman (Mark Ivanir), Emilia doesn’t seem to tell anyone else about her transition. To ensure that Emilia isn’t compromised, she and Rita don’t even reveal her secret to her newfound love Epifanía (Adriana Paz). (Though it is a bit unclear if any of the men in the cartel know. It might be safe to assume that maybe a trusted few who continue to serve her do.)Eventually, though, Emilia decides to tell Jessi the truth. When it came time to rescue Emilia from her kidnappers, Rita promised to come alone with the money to claim her boss. But she broke her promise and brought backup. This doesn’t escape Gustavo’s notice, and so rapid gunfire ensues in the dark of the night. At this point, Emilia is already in bad shape. While lying down behind a table, hiding from the barrage of bullets with Jessi, she decides to reveal her former identity to her (ex?) wife. Upon realizing what she’s done, confusion, instant regret, panic, and grief wash over Jessi. Shop NowDoes Emilia make it out alive? When Gustavo and Jessi make a run for it, Gustavo insists on bringing Emilia and shoving her in the back of the trunk. Jessi, shaken from everything she just found out, starts to backtrack and asks Gustavo to stop the car. The two end up in a chaotic struggle for control of a gun and the steering wheel, which, of course, ends in the car falling off a cliff and flipping over. And if that weren’t enough, the vehicle combusts, leaving its three passengers in flames. It’s hard to believe that Emilia could have survived that deadly disaster. None of them lived. What happens to La Lucecita, the kids, and everything else Emilia has left behind? With the devastating deaths of both Jessi and Emilia, the kids have become orphans. It’s made clear in the end that Rita becomes their primary caretaker. As for La Lucecita, Emilia’s nonprofit that helps the families of missing persons in Mexico, we can also assume that it falls in the custody of Rita. There is no true visual confirmation in the film of this, but if the nonprofit were to continue with its work, Rita would make the most sense as a figurehead. As for Emilia’s lover Epifanía, we last see her leading a parade through the streets, in honor of her deceased girlfriend. In Emilia’s efforts to reverse all the bad that Manitas did, she and her nonprofit became a beacon of hope and light in her community. So it seems fitting that the film should end with people honoring her life and legacy.
