Alas, the Yankees decided against a qualifying offer for Torres. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if they move on from him altogether, as Hal Steinbrenner has made it known that he’d like a payroll below $300 million while simultaneously retaining Soto.

The New York Yankees appear ready to enter the 2024-25 offseason without Gleyber Torres in the picture. The volatile second baseman is now a free agent with no ties to the Yankees because he wasn’t even extended the qualifying offer.

It remains to be seen whether the New York Yankees will try and re-sign Gleyber Torres in free agency this offseason. Regardless of whether he returns to the Bronx or ends up elsewhere else, Torres showed down the stretch and in the playoffs that he can be an asset to any team's lineup.

The MLB’s deadline for teams to extend qualifying offers to players on the final years of their contracts was at 5 PM ET on Monday evening. The Yankees declined to extend the $21 million qualifying offer Torres was up for to him by the cut-off time.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Yankees extended the qualifying offer to Juan Soto, but they did not for second baseman Gleyber Torres.
