Just before Rishabh Pant’s record-breaking bid, Punjab Kings (PBKS) grabbed headlines by signing Shreyas Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore, briefly making him the most expensive player in IPL history.

Ten teams spent Rs 639.15 crore to sign a total of 182 players in a two-day bidding action in Jeddah. Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer bagged a combined amount of Rs 53.75 crore while the likes of Kane Williamson and Steve Smith went unsold.

Rishabh Pant shattered IPL records, fetching a historic Rs 27 crore from Lucknow Super Giants, becoming the highest-paid player ever. Shreyas Iyer wasn't far behind, joining Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crore.

The bids soared as frequently as the sixes rolled off his bat, as India’s star wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant pipped top-order batter Shreyas Iyer to become the most expensive Indian Premier League (IPL) signing in the marquee league’s history.

LSG's massive bid for Pant eclipsed Shreyas Iyer's record as the tournament's costliest player within minutes. Earlier,  Punjab Kings had shattered the record by acquiring Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore.

Rishabh Pant's contract ​​​is of Rs 27 crore per season. Now, he will not receive that full Rs 27 crore. According to the Government of India Income Tax slabs as of the 2024-25 financial year, a person with a salary of Rs 15 lakh or more per year will have to pay 30% of it as tax.
