California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday that the Golden State will move forward with a special election in early November to place its own redistricting plan on a ballot measure before voters.

Texas Democrats geared up for another day of defiance against Gov. Greg Abbott and the state GOP as they try to move forward with their controversial redistricting.

Texas’ redistricting standoff rose to a new level Friday as Democrats once again denied a quorum to allow the House to consider the GOP-led plan and Republicans responded by threatening more punitive action.

Newsom said his state will move forward with plans for a November special election that would allow Democrats to redraw congressional maps.

Ohio Democrats are taking inspiration from Texas as they gear up for their own congressional redistricting battle. Democrats across the nation are showing solidarity with Texas lawmakers, ones who fled their state to block a Republican-proposed congressional map from being passed — a map that redrew several seats currently held by Democrats to make them more favorable for the GOP.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Texas Democrats jointly promoted California’s plan to redraw congressional lines and offset a redistricting scheme in Texas. The proposed map is expected to be made public next week.
