The New York Mets have signed former Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal to a one-year deal.

New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman reported Thursday that the Mets have reached out to the Padres about Cease, one of baseball’s premier pitchers. While the Chicago Cubs also expressed interest, the Padres reportedly prefer the Mets’ prospect offerings.

The Chicago Cubs allowed Nick Madrigal to walk in November, non-tendering the former No. 4 pick. Madrigal was expected to be an elite player at the big league level after being selected No. 4 by the Chicago White Sox in the 2018 MLB Draft.

The price tag for Cease could evolve, but sources said the current potential acquisition cost presents a hurdle for the Mets.
