As the July 9 tariff deadline looms and without a trade deal with the U.S., Japanese carmakers are facing the tough choice of hiking prices on exported vehicles or absorbing the 25% increased cost to sell a car across the Pacific.

President Donald Trump said he is not considering delaying his July 9 deadline for higher tariffs to resume and renewed his threat to cut off talks and impose duty rates on several nations, including Japan.

Just three of Japan’s six major automakers have raised prices in the U.S., and only Subaru’s hike has come close to the 25% tariff imposed on imported vehicles.
