National Guard personnel in 20 states and the District of Columbia have been activated or are on standby to aid local authorities ahead of Tuesday’s election, Pentagon officials said Monday. Around 125 National Guardsmen in 10 states have been activated for election support so far,

Oregon and Nevada also plan on having National Guard troops on standby to assist local law enforcement on election day.

The decision by Gov. Jay Inslee comes after ballot boxes were burned in his state and in Oregon, and amid broader concerns about election-related violence.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) activated the National Guard to be on stand-by in the event it is asked to support local law enforcement and the Washington State Patrol during election week, a press release issued Friday said.

The National Guard advises state officials and works with law enforcement to prevent and respond to cyber threats.
