Trey Lance has all but locked up the backup role to Herbert. Lance was sharp as a passer, finishing with 7 of 15 passes for 127 yards. He also led the team in rushing with four carries for 25 yards. Lance has consistently been more in control of the offense compared to Taylor Heinicke.

Coach Jim Harbaugh said Johnston sustained a concussion when he absorbed a hard hit from Rams safety Tanner Ingle on a deep pass from quarterback Justin Herbert and then struck his head on the turf. Johnston was in jeopardy as he juggled the ball, attempting to latch onto it.

Los Angeles Chargers receiver Quentin Johnston has left the SoFi Stadium field on a cart after taking a big hit on the third play of a preseason game Saturday.

The Rams don’t put much stock in the preseason but they do use it to give their backups an opportunity to compete and showcase their talent before final roster cuts. That’s mostly what this game will be about for them, whereas the Chargers are using it more for regular-season prep by playing some of their starters.
