An EF-2 tornado touched down in New Richmond, Wisconsin, during Thursday evening's severe storms, the National Weather Service says. There were more than a dozen tornado warnings and multiple observed tornadoes across Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Storms — accompanied by booming thunder, lightning displays and powerful winds — swept through parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, northern Indiana and Michigan overnight Thursday, leaving scores of trees down and thousands of homes without power.

Areas north and west of Madison are under the greatest risk for large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and possible tornadoes.
