The North Carolina county that is home to Asheville overcounted deaths caused by Helene by as many as 30, according to a statement Tuesday from its sheriff’s office and data from the state, significantly reducing the death toll from the historic storm.

Tony Garrison, 52, died on Sept. 27 from a landslide caused by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, according to the Asheville Fire Department. Garrison was both a Battalion Chief with the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer firefighter with the Garren Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

North Carolina municipalities such as Asheville and Blowing Rock and communities in Tennessee may see a credit downgrade in the wake of Hurricane Helene, S&P Global Ratings said in a report on Thursday.
