The United Nations World Food Programme has temporarily stopped distributing food aid in a famine-struck camp for displaced people in Sudan's North Darfur amid escalating violence, warning that thousands of families could starve in the coming weeks.

The World Food Programme said fighting in Sudan’s civil war has forced its partners to leave the camp of half a million people for safety.

The World Food Programme has halted aid distribution in the Zamzam camp in North Darfur. WFP officials said intensified fighting between the military and RSF paramilitary forced them to stop providing the aid.

The World Food Programme, the largest provider of food aid in Sudan, said on Wednesday it was forced to pause food distributions in Sudan's famine-plagued Zamzam camp in North Darfur.

The U.N.'s World Food Program said Wednesday that it was forced to suspend operations in and around the famine-hit Zamzam displacement camp in Sudan's North Darfur because of escalating violence between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
