Louisiana lawmakers have advanced House Bill 9, aiming to generate $400 million by taxing 41 new services, including digital streaming, lawn care, and pet grooming.

The Louisiana House passed a number of bills Tuesday that are part of Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax reform session. The foundational legislation, HB 1 lowers the personal income tax rate to a flat 3%.

Louisiana lawmakers will consider expanding sales tax collection on over 40 services during the third special session.

During the first days of Louisiana’s special legislative session, lawmakers took significant steps on several high-stakes bills aimed at overhauling the state’s tax code and reforming juvenile prosecution laws. A total of 31 bills have been introduced, though not all of them relate to Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax reforms.

The Louisiana legislature has advanced a bill that will add dozens of services to be subject to sales tax. Lawmakers showed some concerns about what the true cost to businesses and citizens will be. House Bill 9 adds 41 more services to the sales tax,

The bill would cover services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, and more. It has already passed the Louisiana House and moved to the Senate, and most Louisiana lawmakers seem to be in favor of it.

The Louisiana House of Representatives approved legislation Wednesday that would expand sales taxes to digital streaming services, establish a flat tax on corporate income and repeal a whole host of special interest tax breaks.
