"Emilia Pérez" is certainly the most talked-about Oscar contender of the year, for better and worse. The Spanish-language musical gained significant awards steam when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year and won the Jury Prize alongside a shared Best Actress for its three leading ladies.

This was supposed to be Netflix’s year to finally win best picture. The streaming giant won four Golden Globes and nabbed 13 Oscar nominations for “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language movie musical about a transgender drug lord.
