Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. Her action began a chain reaction that reshaped America.

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery Alabama, Rosa Parks, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person, in defiance of Jim Crow segregation laws. This event helped spark the Montgomery bus boycott and the civil rights movement which would revolutionize rights for Black Americans.

VIA Metropolitan Transit will offer fare-free service on Wednesday in observance of Rosa Parks Day, honoring the civil rights icon.

The city announced that the memorial is meant to recognize the Dec. 1 anniversary of a milestone in the 1955 Civil Rights movement, when Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. After refusing the bus driver’s order to move, she was arrested for civil disobedience.

Rosa Parks Day was Sunday. But the legacy of the civil rights activist will continue to be spotlighted Monday as MATA will commemorate her with live history monologues abroad a Memphis bus.
