May 5, 2017 · I currently use Smartwool PhD ultralight merino wool hiking socks for my thru hikes. the problem is the durability of the sock is not what I expect for the price point. also, because it is so thin and light, my foot tends to shift inside my shoe a fair amount. on the flipside, they dry quickly. darn tough seem to be a popular alternative.

May 9, 2017 · Remember that the worst conditions is 30F and raining, 10F and snowing is much more comfy. Better than any Gore Tex sock. Hanz may be are owned by Seal Skinz. .5 mm NRS socks made for paddling also are fine. I have Gore Tex Rocky WP socks, Seal Skinz WP socks, NRS neoprene .5 mm, and the Hanz model mentioned.

We started about the same time and he finished with "Harriet Tubman" over two weeks before I did. My friend and constant hiking companion "Arrow" did the last 1000 or so miles in Chacos. Both X Man and Arrow protected their feet with socks.

Jun 28, 2024 · After humping a ruck crosscountry for over 20yrs, when I started hiking I went to trail shoes from mids pretty quick. Currently using Xero Terraflex and loving it. Agree that the increased foot dexterity and quicker reaction has helped avoid any serious ankle mishaps. Second the good socks.

I have two pairs of both, and like both quite a bit, but have never done any hiking over about 3 miles with either pair. Any idea which pair lasts longer getting abused day in and day out?

Pretty much exclusively hikes in sandals. In fact, he triple crowned in them. And most of the photos of him wearing sandals, hes wearing socks.

Dec 14, 2016 · A big variable, often more so than temperature, is moisture. Melting snow, for instance, can be very challenging. For lightweight hiking, I've learned to carry some bread bags. They can protect your gloves and socks during a wet snowfall. Good old Bagtex has saved the day a few times for a few grams of mass.
