I was thinking of upgrading to the M1, but I don't really need to, so I will wait a year or two and see what Apple comes up with. For me, the biggest advantage of the M1 would be the screen.

It’s quite difficult to destroy a computer using PD with any (good quality) PD charger. Watch out for the cheap knockoff chargers. I’ve seen enough fires caused by Wish chargers in my line of work.
