Recently, Placer County residents are becoming victim to a phone scam where the caller identifies himself as Captain Swearingen with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and tells the victim that they failed to appear for a grand jury subpoena. The caller asks for the victim to send money in lieu of arrest. The number they are having victims call is (530) 358-0518, ext. 112. Do NOT fall for this scam! As we have stated on prior scam alerts, we will never ask you to send us money to avoid arrest. I
