Lots of you have been asking about backgrounds. One technique I like, is chalk pastels. It works well around large shapes like this Elephant or the Turtle in my free book, Flourish. If you don't have chalk pastels, eye shadow works well! Just keep a damp cloth on hand to wipe those smudgy fingers and remember to give it a good spray with fixative or hairspray in a well ventilated area to 'set' the chalk before you begin to colour.
