The evacuation from the French port of Dunkirk began #OnThisDay 1940. Though Winston Churchill and his advisers had initially hoped to rescue 20,000-30,000 troops from the beaches, 338,000 had been rescued by 4 June. The successful evacuation was a great boost to civilian morale, and created the 'Dunkirk spirit' which helped Britain to fight on in the summer of 1940.
