We built a quinzhee to practice surviving in harsh winter conditions! We just piled a bunch of snow on ice, let it freeze during the night, and next day we carved into the quinzhee, making a sleepign area for 3. We built two quinzhees on a winter survival course. Ours sank through the ice but other group's was just fine. Why? We think that a crack formed on the ice where the quinzhee was, it started collecting water, got too heavy and eventually cracked the ice.
