The United States Marine Corps was officially founded on November 10, 1775, during the American Revolution. The first Marine recruitment drive was held at the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, making it a legendary birthplace. Captain Samuel Nicholas began enlisting Marines there to serve aboard naval ships and conduct amphibious operations.
